OK, not a big problem but I still want some opinions!

We plan to make a headboard that will be padded and covered with fabric, so the panel material itself won't be visible. To add some visual thickness, I will put battens around it.

I know that the most common for interior carpentry is MDF, and in the guides I've seen online, that's always what's suggested. But I'm wondering if OSB is an option...
OSB contains less glue, which many claim is healthier. It's a bit cheaper, but the price doesn't determine it for me.

Are there other pros/cons that could be decisive? I imagine that staples might hold better in OSB or that it might even be difficult to shoot the staples into MDF. Which is stiffer? Even if I'm going to add battens, you never know if they might warp, and that would affect the panel.

I would have used
a) plywood, or alternatively
b) particleboard.

A bit old-fashioned thinking maybe :(

Both options feel very oldschool. ;-)
Plywood is probably much better than OSB but it is much more expensive. And chipboard contains a lot of glue and is probably not as rigid. Or am I wrong?

Should the headboard have any load-bearing function?

Nope!

12 mm K-plywood is not much more expensive than MDF (100 SEK/m2 vs 70 SEK/m2 at Beijers) but much easier to attach staples, screws, etc. to.

The only drawback with OSB is that it splinters more easily when you saw it. Take whatever you find cheapest in the right size.
