Building a fence on the patio!

Hello everyone!
After studying some other windbreaks/fences, I was particularly drawn to this design through the link:

However, my question is! How the heck do you manage to attach the beams to the posts?
Are they through-going?
Do you simply drive a side-screw straight into the post?

Yes, either angled or a longer screw from the other side (the side of the rib), but maybe it's overkill with a screw of that length
