build the roof with cross up to

I'm going to rebuild the porch and a balcony,

I've thought about having a white railing, with a top rail, then a cross, and then a top rail again.

I was thinking of attaching a frame and then fastening boards on both sides as I think it looks the best, but how should I make the crosses most efficiently? Size of material, etc.?

Doesn't anyone have an idea about what material thickness etc. I should have??

Everything depends on heights, lengths, etc. It's probably best to build a small template with intended timber and set it up and test it. Walk a bit away from the house and see if it looks good.
