I'm considering building a shelf with red bricks above the stove. The idea is to place it around the top (is it called a mantelpiece?) with one stone out and about 4 in a row. I'll have matches and maybe a candlestick on the shelf.

Will this hold, or does it need reinforcement in some way? Brick fireplace with burning logs, surrounded by a brick wall. A black metal chimney pipe extends upward. Firewood and a pot are visible near the hearth.

Doubtful if you can get it to stick, normally the shelf stones are embedded in the hood, if you want the shelf, you'll have to hack up the hood with half a stone and embed the new ones, but can't say if it will work, depends on the thickness and construction of the hood.
Otherwise, some form of guiderails screwed into the hood and stone laid on them.
There are no standards, so the blacksmith will have to make guiderails.
