Build a wind shelter where it BLOWS
Hello!
We are planning to build shelters for the horses in the pasture, but the problem is that it occasionally gets very windy there. We don't want the entire structure to blow away in the fall, so I'm wondering how sturdy we should make it? How deep do we need to dig and pour footings? I'm also trying to figure out the thing with footings, I've seen that you can both cast them yourself and buy ready-made ones, what is the difference? Is it sturdier to cast them yourself?

Can you specify more precisely what you are planning to do?
The wind loads on a building depend on factors such as height, width, and roof slope.
Custom-cast plinths are useful if larger plinths are needed than the pre-made ones available for purchase. Casting your own in the same size as "store-bought plinths" is not worthwhile.

It will be about 4x5 meters in area with walls on three sides and one long side completely open. I was thinking that the height should be about 2.80 m on one long side and 3.30 m on the other side.

Buy a portable wind shelter from Tomas Olsson. Drive some poles into the ground and tie it down. Alternatively, get some concrete beams to attach the wind shelter to. You can also pour a slab if you think it is necessary. Can we link here without it being seen as advertising? www.toab.nu.

If you get tired of the horse paddock, you can just move the wind shelter to a new paddock (e.g., tampskador).

10 large (70 cm) purchased plinths should suffice for anchoring. One in each corner, two on the long sides, and one on each short side (between the corner plinths, that is).
Use as much and as thick timber as possible. This way, it will be heavier, sturdier, and a more stable construction, and there will be some margin for the horses to gnaw and rub against, which they will do vigorously.
The horses will exert just as much stress on the construction as the wind. A 500 kg horse that presses its rump against a wall or post, 1.5 m above the ground, to scratch itself will push pretty hard.
4"x4", 5"x5" or preferably even thicker timber is suitable for the framework. Plenty of diagonal braces in all directions, including in the roof.
The roof needs to be well anchored to the framework, as there can be significant lift forces from the wind (both from below and above).
