Hello,
I would like a storage bench with a lid that can be sat on, I have looked around at Jysk, Jula, Rusta, etc., but can't find anything suitable.
So I thought maybe I would build one, to be placed outside on the balcony (not glazed).
I don't want it to mold or get earwigs and insects inside.
It should be able to withstand rain and snow as much as possible.

What type of boards do I need, are white-foiled or MDF hobby boards sufficient??
I want it white, should it be painted with a special paint and varnished afterward??
Are supports needed or will the boards hold for sitting on??
Length 120cm, Depth 45cm, Height 35-40cm.

Grateful for all the help

MDF is NOT suitable, it absorbs water like a roll of paper towels.
White-foiled if it's particle board is also not great.
What might work is solid wood, which is available in glued boards.
Paint thoroughly.
If it is constantly exposed to rain, the lid probably won't last anyways.
Marine plywood holds up better.

I saw an exciting new material at Hornback hardware store today called Bamboodeck. http://bamboodeck.se/

It seemed very low maintenance and dimensionally stable and light. However, it was only available in gray and brown, not white, but it can surely be painted with lacquer.

Baboodeck is flooring it says on the website, is it available as boards??
Where can one buy boat plywood??

Thanks for all the answers

Yes, bamboodeck are boards. Boat plywood is available at most lumberyards, though unfortunately not at large hardware stores like Hornbach.

I have beijerbygg, byggmax, k-rauta, and coopbygg nearby.
Bauhaus in the nearest city.
Thinking of having waterproof seat cushions or similar on the lid.

What do you think I should do??

Thanks

There are cushion boxes available at Jysk that you can also sit on. They are really stylish in teak with notched joints in the lid. It is ventilated so it doesn't get too tight and rain can't get in. They are designed to be outdoors and if you wash it every year and oil it thoroughly, it will stay nice for many years.

Okay, I have been checking out Jysk, K-Rauta, and Jula. All of them have storage boxes that are NOT suitable for sitting unless you are 3m tall, but at least they can support sitting.

I will build one at the right height. I was thinking of 45mm studs and then boards around it.

What kind of boards should I ask the hardware store for, solid wood boards??

There won't be constant rain on the lid, but a few splashes here and there, now and then, maybe.

Thanks for all the answers.
