Build a root cellar with an entrance from the kitchen
Hello,
We have purchased a small divided farm in Skåne, Sjöbo, and we're planning to have a root cellar. To assist us, I have bought the book "Bygga jordkällare" by Urpo Nurmisto. However, I would need advice on what to consider and how to construct the root cellar by the house with an entrance from the kitchen.
Our house was built at the end of the 1800s/beginning of the 1900s. It has a shallow foundation, rendered clay bricks or bricks. The height of the foundation is a few steps. (We haven't moved in yet).
My thoughts are generally to first reach the ground level in a small cold storage - on ground-level slab. Where there is also an entrance from the outside. Then from there down into the anteroom of the root cellar. The height levels are somewhat problematic. How large the spaces will need to be. And how to insulate the first storage - if one should do it.
I have tried to find descriptions online without finding one for a root cellar with an entrance from the house - not a root cellar under the house.
The ground is naturally well-drained. Lots of gravel. And the idea is to try to dig it down as much as possible.

Nothing is impossible. You can have a basement staircase with a descent from the kitchen, so it could just as well lead to a root cellar. But it will be a lot of digging. Then you can ask how much food is to be stored in that cellar, and how often do you plan to retrieve food from there? A root cellar is not like a refrigerator, where you are constantly going to get things.
Yes - we are going to grow our own vegetables precisely because we eat a lot of them =O)
And they thrive and are best stored "in the soil".
