I am going to build a dock on an existing concrete foundation of 5x2 m, and I want to extend it by about 5 meters without support from the bottom, i.e., cantilevered. Thus, 5 meters hangs over the water and 5 meters is attached to the concrete. My question: wood or steel beam (H-beam)?
Regards,
Jan

Forget about extending 5 meters straight out without support; it can be done if it's suspended like a drawbridge.

Yes, a 5-meter cantilever doesn't work without supporting the beam from above or below. I know a construction buddy who did something similar with Hunnebäck aluminum beam, but then the cantilever was about 3 meters as I recall.

But if you can get hold of used Hunnebäck aluminum beams, you'll have a good start. Like here:

If 5 meters is a requirement, and no support from underneath, then it's kind of a suspension bridge that's needed.
