Discovered a musty smell and black mold on the bottom edge of the drywall. Also rusty screws at the bottom edge.
Seems like there is capillary moisture from the floor, the drywall was snug against the floor.
This is just a storage room, entrance only from outside. Located in one corner of the house with two walls under the house that are slab-on-grade. The room lacks a heat source.
As the pictures show, I've started tearing out drywall and insulation. It felt and looked very dry behind the insulation on the walls.
As it is built now, it is:
Platon membrane on the outside of the storage, though I don't know how it looks "under" the slab, facing the house, Platon membrane or not.
Wooden studs
Insulation/mineral wool
Plastic sheeting
Standard drywall
In the ceiling, wooden studs then Styrofoam about 10 cm thick.
I have no issue using this as a cold storage with exposed cinder blocks on the walls, but the bathroom is located above the storage.
Will there be significant heat loss upwards if the storage is now uninsulated on the walls?
Is there a risk of subzero temperatures in winter and potential problems upwards in the bathroom because of this?
Insulate on the inside appropriately to minimize heat loss or use it as a cold storage and then risk potential issues such as condensation on the storage ceiling (=under the bathroom) due to large temperature differences and so on?
That construction didn't look great with wood and plastic. Better to tear it down like you did and have it as cold storage. If you don't add any heat down there, the insulation doesn't serve any purpose, it will be just as cold in the winter.
