Hello, we have a house built in 1949 and sometime probably in the 70s, the then-owner furnished the basement. One of the rooms in the basement was furnished with styrofoam which we began to tear out.

At first, we thought that where the walls were black were moisture damages, but in some places, it almost looks painted onto the concrete. (see image) We are considering sending in samples but does anyone have experience with this or can tell from the images if it is black glue or not, and do you have any companies you can recommend for sampling?

  • Old basement wall with dark patches, peeling paint, and debris on the floor; potential signs of moisture or black adhesive on concrete surface.
  • Basement room with exposed concrete walls showing black patches, possibly moisture or black glue. Includes a window, radiator, and a ladder.
  • Concrete wall with black patches and white residue, possibly indicating adhesive or mold, in a basement.
  • Old basement wall with potential black adhesive or moisture damage, showing peeling layers and dark patches, possibly from 1970s renovation.
Probably ordinary roofing felt, take a small piece and heat it, does it smell like asphalt?
But it could also be black mold, which doesn't get soft and sticky from heat.
If you have used the heat gun.
