Hi!

I'm in the process of tearing up the floors in my new house and discovered this under the vinyl flooring:
Brown floor adhesive under old flooring with visible wear and patches, possibly needing analysis for asbestos; described as more brown than typical black mastic.

The house is from 1974, and from what I have read on the forum, there might be a risk of asbestos in the material, but according to the craftsman I hired, it is not asbestos glue! It should be dark like tar according to him to be black glue.
And when I google black glue, it seems to be darker (this is more brown in color), should I send this for analysis? Or is the craftsman right? :o

Black adhesive doesn't have to be completely pitch black. It's dark enough to contain tar (and asbestos). If you plan to work with the adhesive, you should analyze it first.

Thank you for the answer! I was planning to lay new flooring (parquet or laminate) on top of this, but maybe it's just as good to bring in a fan with a filter and let it run for a few days to remove all airborne debris.

Don't you think there's a risk of releasing asbestos when, for example, vacuuming or similar by letting it remain?

If the glue is dried out and powdery, fibers might potentially be sucked up during vacuuming. Otherwise, there's no danger. If the glue is dry, you might possibly bind the glue surface with some paint or other, and lay foam under parquet/laminate.
