I am going to renovate a staircase and need a stair gauge, Trappkompass. There are a few different versions available. What works best? What do professionals mainly use? We are two people sharing, so we are willing to pay a bit more for a good one.

The basic types I have looked at in metal are as follows. Either one with a centered spindle or one that forms a frame.:
Diagram showing two types of step gauges: one with a central spindle and one forming a frame. Used for stair measurements in renovation projects.
Metal stair tread template tool in an open wooden box, used for measuring and marking stair steps during renovation projects.

I have used a centered spindle. It worked incredibly smoothly. I have a U-shaped staircase and in the turn we had 5-6 corners to start from on the step, I find it hard to see how it works with the other model.
