Hi!

I'm planning to renovate our fence where some of the horizontal boards ("liggare") have rotted, and it has spread to some of the vertical boards ("ribbor"). Sorry if I'm using incorrect terms here; I hope you understand.

Red wooden fence with vertical and horizontal planks, showing signs of rot, with a blue car parked behind it on a residential street.

As a beginner, I have a few questions:

Of course, I want to avoid the problem happening again. What should I consider?
* Pressure-treated wood isn't a good option, I guess, since it can't be painted directly?
* I've heard that you should oil the ends of the horizontals to prevent them from rotting from the ends. Is that true, or is it better to just paint? If I should oil, what type of oil?
* Anything else to consider?

Then there's the matter of fastening the ends. Currently, it's done with angle brackets that have been recessed into the ends of the horizontals. This eliminates the gap between the horizontal and the part to which it's attached (post or wall in the picture). I assume I should do the same with the new horizontals.

* How do you make such a recess? Going at it with a chisel doesn't seem right; I guess it should be routed out, but with what type of tool?

Lastly, when I remove the old angle brackets, several old screw holes will "open up."

* Should I seal these screw holes with something, and if so, what?

Close-up of a wooden fence with red-painted horizontal and vertical boards joined by a metal angle bracket. Some screws and weathering are visible. Close-up of a red-painted wooden fence rail attached to a white post, showing rust on a bolt and a small gap at the connection.

All good advice is gratefully received :-) It doesn't necessarily have to be answers to my questions above.

/Fredrik

I suggest that you instead tear down the existing fence and build a new one with sawn timber, painted with distemper.

Thanks for the reply! As I said, I'm a beginner, so here are some follow-up questions:

What do you mean by tearing down the fence? As I mentioned, I plan to replace the rails, but it feels wasteful to throw away the slats that are still in good condition.
And what is sawn wood? Isn't all wood sawn? :-)

If you need a fence on the site, I suggest you build a new one using sawn, non-planed timber and paint it with Falu Rödfärg. If you choose planed timber or unsawn roundwood, the Falu Rödfärg adheres poorly and if you paint with anything other than Falu Rödfärg, I believe future maintenance will become so burdensome that you won't be able to handle it.

That is painted with plastic paint which is a sure way for it to rot in 10 years!

Same paint as the facade, I guess (it was done before we moved in), Alcro Bestå. Do you mean that a fence requires different paint?

Do you think it seems like a good paint for the fence? Is the lifespan of the fence sufficient, and does the maintenance feel easy and cheap?

As I said, I am the novice here, but according to, for example, this link (alcro.se), Alcro Bestå Cover Paint is a good paint for fences, but maybe there are aspects that are missed in the article?

Good enough for the manufacturer, you have to buy paint often and they earn enough on Bestå.
Pretty good for the forest industries and the building supplies store since this type of paint means frequent replacement of fences due to rot.
Quite bad for personal economy and the environment.
Really bad for the mood since the boards apparently rot away before the large posts in the ground are finished.

If this is the acrylic paint you mean, it is not suitable for fences, it is meant for facades where the wood is only painted on one side.
Green paint bucket labeled "Alcro Bestå Paint" for facades, unsuitable for fences; reduces dirt absorption and offers mold protection.

it feels silly to throw away the ribs that are still healthy.
if the liggarnas are bad, then the ribs are likely rotten where they rest against the liggarnas
the liggarna should be cut at an angle so they slope away from the ribs

Looks like it is.
Red picket fence with a blue car parked behind it, set in a residential neighborhood with colorful houses.

But if you yourself are satisfied with the lifespan of the fence and find the maintenance easy and cheap, you can of course continue with that type of paint and those slats.

I suggest slamfärg, it allows the wood to dry out after precipitation and gives a nice color, hardly protects against rot or moisture, but is cheap and easy to apply and doesn't need scraping.

And what is sawn timber? Isn't all timber sawn?
Yes, but most timber sold is also planed

For example, a 21x70 mm is around 25x75 mm when it is only sawn

Yes, definitely call Ottosson paint.
My wooden fence is from 1961, only pressure wash every other year and glaze every 20 years.
