Hello!
I'm calculating and designing a fairly large carport and am unsure about my own calculations since this is new for me. The conditions are that I want a flat roof (3 degrees) to be able to build a patio on top, and the height of the construction must be kept low. Therefore, I have thought of a ridge beam to support the whole thing. The size is 7m long with a span of 8m, and here come the problems - according to my calculations, it becomes a large beam if you want to avoid support beyond the ends.
The glulam has ended up at 115x495, and with a steel beam, I ended up with a HEA280. I have calculated with a 2.0kN/m2 snow load and 0.5kN/m2 dead load.
Is this reasonable, or could it work with a more slender beam?
I hope someone with knowledge and a feel for this can give advice.
