We have a staircase that the previous owner installed. It is free-hanging with a metal structure and wooden steps. The nice thing about it is that it lets through a lot of light. The downside is that it is not child-safe at all. How can you best secure this staircase without removing too much of the open feel?

Complete with plexiglass or tempered glass. On the step surfaces as well as between the handrail and the stringer.

Glass sounds nicer than plexiglass if you want it to stay fresh over time. The stairs flex a little when you run on them, could this create problems if you choose a glass railing? How would you securely attach the glass in this case? And how do you minimize the gap at the bottom against the steps?
