Hello. My son and daughter-in-law have extended their house by 5 x 7 m. In the process, they also got a basement/crawl space with approximately the same dimensions with concrete walls and sloping rock from one short side to the other. In the lowest part, we have gravel and concrete slabs, creating a flat floor of about 14 m2 and about 2m ceiling height. There in the corner is the door, built according to "imported_Byggarens" recipe. There, by the short side, we plan to make a wall-mounted workbench for a small home workshop. The rest of the space will be for storage. There will also be a few shelves for paint cans and such. The climate is Värmdö.

Now to the question: Before we clutter the walls with a bench and shelves, perhaps we should insulate the walls. We do not plan to install heating. The provided heat is from above the floor joists and stored heat in the rock. A space heater when working there in the winter, nothing more, but it would be good if it were frost-free considering the paint cans. So is insulation needed? Would it be useful? If so, how thick and what kind? Can you glue styrofoam to the walls?

Generally, you should have the insulation on the outside.

Exactly. Otherwise, the basement walls will just become colder and more humid, which can lead to other problems.
