I'm building an American-style porch and I'm now considering the front beam that will be on the laminated posts. Ideally, I don't want to notch it out, but can I attach it on the outside of the posts, or should I attach the beam on top of the posts with angle brackets? What is best?
Completely agree. Urjackning is definitely the most stylish and best. With the right tools, it goes quickly and becomes straight and neat. (recessing on the inside looks the best!)
Feel free to suggest what you think are the right tools and methods

Inset on the inside? I've probably never seen that. This is how we did it.
Notched on the outside
I aligned all the joist hangers first, then we could cut and notch all the posts before they were erected. That makes it easy to get everything straight.

Yeah, look how neat, from the inside...
The reason I think it looks significantly neater to place the bearer on the inside is that it becomes more aesthetically pleasing. American verandah roofs are already large and impressive as they are. If you place the bearer on the outside, the posts look even shorter and you get even more "roof." Additionally, you don't see the notching, and if you need to splice the bearer on a post, it's not visible from the outside.
Of course, it's a matter of taste, and nothing is right or wrong. Here are some pictures with the bearer on the inside. Do what you think looks best!
Since I live in the American South, I had to comment here
The porches you see here have a substantial beam that sits on top and is larger than the post. So, if you want to get the right feel, I would suggest covering the beam so it becomes suitably grand. It doesn't matter which side you place the beam on!

Hehe, good input! But I think the Swedish version of American Porch is as little American as our Pizza is Italian =)
I found another picture of what you mean, which is also pretty nice!
As mentioned, there are no right or wrongs. It's most about making sure it fits with the rest of the house's architecture and what you think looks best. The thickness of the posts, the height of the beam, the angle of the porch roof, potential panel height on the facade, the size of the trim, and corner boards.
Everything plays a part in creating a well-balanced whole that gives that little extra. That makes an attractive house into a beautiful building..

As I said, there are no right or wrong. It's mostly about matching the rest of the house's architecture and what you think looks best. The thickness of the posts, the height of the bearer, the angle of the porch roof, possible panel height on the facade, size of the moldings and corner boards.
Everything plays a role in tying together a well-balanced whole that gives that little extra. Which makes a nice house a beautiful building..

There's probably a lot of truth in what you say.
The picture has precisely that "real" American feel, including the rocking chair and the lamp that looks like an old gas lamp. One thing that I think must be on a porch is a ceiling fan. Maybe it's not as important in Sweden but still...
