Is it possible to nail quarter round without a nail gun? I tried on a test piece but it cracked immediately when I nailed it with a hammer.

If the strip is made of oak, I usually pre-drill. Especially when brass nails (which look the best) are used. But depending on the quality of the wood (which is often poor nowadays), it might be safest to also drill the pine strips.
