Hello!

I'm currently in the middle of installing beadboard and chair rail in our hallway. So far, I've been using construction adhesive, which has worked perfectly. However, I've encountered a small problem on one of the walls with the installation of the chair rail because the wall is quite uneven. The difference is so significant that it will never be possible to press the rail with force and let the adhesive do the job.

I feel like I have three options:

1: Nail the rail in place. This is the option I'm least inclined towards. Simply because nothing else is nailed and it would require something more substantial (= visible) to keep the chair rail in place (since it tends to flex outward in places).

2: Sand down the back of the rail to adjust it to the wall's unevenness. Since the chair rail is relatively delicate, this doesn't seem like an optimal option, as I don't have much room to play with.

3: Fill the gaps with thinner strips that are glued or nailed first and then add the chair rail on top, which can then be glued on. Then caulk on top to make it smooth. This seems quite fiddly and spontaneously like a solution only a "DIYer" (me) would go for?

What do you others say? Are there any more options I'm not thinking of?

Mounting glue and nail gun. Then you need to fill the nail holes before painting. It will still gap a bit against the wall in some places, but if you seal it with soft caulk, it won't be visible after painting.
