Recently had some carpenters here who put up new walls. Today a painter visited to give a quote and pointed out that far too many screws were set too deep. That it would never pass an inspection.

Contacted the carpenter again who didn't think it was a problem.

Attached are some images showing how deep many screws have been driven. What do you think, is this a major issue?

  • Close-up of a screw driven deeply into a wall, highlighting the issue with over-penetration as discussed in a home renovation context.
  • A screw in drywall is countersunk too deep, revealing a hole and improper installation, raising concerns about passing inspection.
Too deep 👎

Yes, they are too deep; they should not go through the paper, but it's not a problem if you put a new one next to it..
Attached is Norgips guideline..

Instructions for screwing plasterboards with diagram showing correct screw positioning relative to the board edge and depth guidelines.

Absolutely too deep. The screw head should apply pressure to the gypsum board; as soon as the screw head breaks through the board, it loses almost all functionality.

However, it can be easily fixed by inserting another screw nearby correctly, then everything can be hidden under plaster and life goes on.

Incredibly careless of a professional to leave that result behind, the professional pride is likely not at its peak.

I wonder how much "cheating" and shortcuts are present in any underlying work if the fully visible surface looks like that...

Thank you for the response.

The carpenter will simply have to come here and finish the job.

Also check the amount of screws because it looks sparse!
