Currently gluing carpet on the stairs* and have read a bit here on the forum. The store I visited didn't have many options for glue, but I chose contact adhesive Casco S9 Super, because I refuse to spend all this work and then have the carpet come loose after a while, and I can't be bothered with different glue for treads and nosings.
I tried gluing the tread first and then around it, and it went well but took an enormous amount of time. Also, I used about a quarter of a can of glue for one step! I've seen that you're supposed to use a "fine-toothed spatula", can anyone recommend a good one? It seems like it would be hard to reuse one since everything sticks to it, which quickly adds up to money when there are 16 steps left to glue in two rounds.
I now applied glue to both the carpet (the kind with a grid on the underside) and the step itself, waited a while (10-20 minutes), and then placed it. Nine-tenths of the glue went onto the carpet.
Seeking tips on how to reduce glue usage. Would it be enough to just apply a decent amount of glue on the step and lay the carpet before it dries?
Is it safe to glue the entire step in one go?

Contact adhesive (at least S9) should be applied to both surfaces, then allowed to dry until tack-free, and finally, the surfaces are pressed together. Bonds immediately and permanently. Use disposable foam rollers to apply thinner layers.
I read the instructions on the can, but I think I've seen somewhere that if you're gluing textiles, it's enough to apply it to one surface.
Good tip about the foam roller. I'll see if I can get hold of one.
It might be worth using a cheaper carpet adhesive on the tread surface and just have contact adhesive on the stair nose...
