Hi all experts

I have a vacation home with a great need for renovation. I have now started thinking about the outer panel which is seriously neglected. The plan is to replace all the paneling and instead install horizontal paneling on the entire house.

The house is a log cabin from the early 1900s.

My question. The current panel is installed without any air gap.
There is only some paper in between.
There should be an air gap, right?

How should I proceed when installing the horizontal paneling? All tips and advice are welcome.

The picture is a bit bad but...
Close-up of deteriorating wood siding on an old log cabin, showing damage and lack of ventilation space, with some black paper material visible.

Nail vertical battens to the frame, then place your panel within them. A weather membrane first is no disadvantage.

Inside out:

- Existing frame
- Possible additional insulation
- Wind barrier
- Vertical battens (spacers creating an air gap) don't forget mouse strip at the bottom
- Horizontal paneling

Thanks. Mouse guard is something I hadn't thought about.

We'll see if there will be any insulation.
