Hello
I followed the thread "Wood vs. Stone" but have a couple more questions.

We've "almost" decided to build a house in aerated concrete and were planning to use Ytong wall elements (600mm or 900mm wide).
Unfortunately, these are no longer manufactured, so we are looking for alternatives.

Are there other manufacturers that produce the elements mentioned above?
Links, addresses, phone numbers to manufacturers would be great!

Is it possible/recommended for a normally handy (engineer but not construction) person to build the walls with aerated concrete blocks on their own?
Approximately how long does it take / per square meter or some other measurable value
Links that describe such a construction process would be great!

Apparently, you glue the aerated concrete blocks together. Are there any complications/problems with this?

Approximately what price can I expect if I hire a mason to do the job?

Super grateful for answers

Hello,

I think choosing to build with stone is a good choice.

Other suppliers include H+H Celcon (www.hhcelcon.se), and I also think they have a slightly more developed aerated concrete program.

I added a bit about our building in the wood vs stone thread.

It took 9 days to build 9 walls in one-story for a mason with 40 years of experience and a helper (me). I mostly did the cutting of blocks, made calls and arranged crane trucks, washed, carried, carried, carried, carried, etc.

However, we worked from sunrise to sunset. I recall there was another build nearby that was smaller (about 120m2), and it took 3 masons 2-3 weeks to do the masonry. How much they cost per hour I do not know.

In hindsight, having gone through a project, it's POSSIBLE I would tackle something similar myself with someone else equally inexperienced, albeit with significantly more time. I would, however, never undertake such a project for the first time without an experienced mason anyway. The economic risk is too great if one fails.

I can still remember standing out on the slab with hundreds of pallets of aerated concrete around early one April morning and quietly wondered... what the heck have I gotten myself into. It was comforting to hear my father-in-law’s calm voice; "Okay, let's get started then."

It was a bit tense in the relationship for a couple of days at the beginning before I got over and away from the academic/engineering thinking and more into the builder vibe...
  • If the drawing says a wall should be 21000mm, then that's it +/-0.5mm ;)
  • Not to mention when I ran around with a ruler discreetly measuring the joints.
  • Hmm. Give it a rest Thomas, as long as I know the trend, I’ll adjust it during the process...
  • Hey father-in-law, what is the linear expansion coefficient of a metal tape measure versus fiberglass given today's cold?
