I have bought and am renovating a 19th-century house and redoing the ceiling. I took down the existing boards and found that the center-to-center distance varies between 1400-1800 cc. The beams are only on the exterior walls with a span of 5m (no load-bearing wall). The beams were replaced in the 90s but were still done with such large center-to-center distances… there are also nailed cross beams with cc600.

I now want to put up a tongue and groove ceiling but I'm worried about adding so much weight to the structure.

The upstairs is furnished and there's some movement when walking, but not more than any other older house, I think...

Can someone calm my nerves or do I need to reinforce?

  • Renovated ceiling with wooden beams exposed after removing panels; debris on wooden floor; tools and boxes visible in a partially furnished room.
  • Man with a cap working on exposed ceiling beams in an old house, holding a hammer.
