Hi,

I have a house with a basement that has drainage from the year it was built in 1973. We removed the wooden interior of one of the rooms in the basement 1.5 years ago and plastered and painted the basement wall (silicate paint). There were salt/crystal deposits in some places on the wall that were scraped off.

Now the silicate paint has peeled off in two places, near the floor. Is this a sign that we need to address the drainage, or could it be due to poor silicate paint quality?

Drainage, you can't paint away moisture problems. Silicate paint can improve the visible appearance, but the moisture remains, i.e., not a problem solver.

What is outside the two places? Maybe you have a leak in the gutter or a downspout that ends too close to the house?
Or other reasons that make it wet right there, such as backfall, some vegetation next to the house, or strange roof drainage.
You can do some detective work before it's time to redrain.

Clay soil outside with a large slope towards the house. The last meter is somewhat flat, so it is not optimal.

The moisture showing up down by the basement floor is at least an indication of the drainage because it is supposed to carry away water that is present here.
But you can flush the pipes at the downspouts to see that it drains away, and if you have any cleaning/distribution well, check that water is coming. Municipalities conduct tests with dye to see that water arrives and in the right system, i.e., waste versus stormwater.

The gutters just distribute the water onto the lawn on the other side of the house, and I have not found any inspection wells.
The area lacks connection to stormwater drainage, so drainage is probably connected to a stenkista or to the sewage service.
So it's likely leaning towards re-draining.

But if the wall is cleared of organic material, isn't it just an aesthetic problem that there is some paint peeling? I have that in my basement in a few places, even on an interior wall that I assume no drainage would help with?
