Hello

I have a small extension with a galvanized sheet metal roof. (It is also a balcony)

Under the post of the balcony railing, it has rusted and created a hole in the metal. Rusted galvanized metal roof with visible holes and corrosion; part of a balcony support issue.

Luckily? there is another sheet metal underneath, at least towards the edge of the roof, and under the metal there is some form of roofing felt.

There is no moisture in the timber.

Can this be repaired in some way? (Preferably without welding) Or should the roof be dismantled and completely replaced?

My idea was to sand away the rust, then place a new small metal sheet under and over the hole, "glued" with some form of Roof Sealant, like this one https://www.bygghemma.se/hus-och-by...PlZ-OhZCDLmFuiI4B-kJoX9Guzcdkn3BoCwJAQAvD_BwE

Or is this completely misguided? The appearance does not matter in this case.

I would put a sheet either under or over, not both, as moisture will collect between them and rust. In your case, over, since appearance doesn't matter. I have no experience with the sealant you mentioned. I can recommend bt multibond at Biltema. https://www.biltema.se/bygg/kemikalier/ovriga-kemikalier/bt-multibond-2000028571

You should use a wire brush to remove the worst rust, then apply zinc paint. https://www.biltema.se/bilvard/bilu...ukter/zinkkallgalvanisering---farg-2000023760
Apply the sealant and put on a piece of sheet metal. Once the sealant has dried, you can apply more zinc paint.

Thank you very much for the tips!

I would think that the reason it's rusting holes in the sheet metal right there is because water/snow accumulates there. If you're just going to fix it by laying a sheet over it, it's probably important that you also remove the balcony railing. Just sanding and gluing might risk worsening the damage since rust must be completely removed to disappear, so it needs to be sandblasted to go away.

If there's something important under the balcony, I would have installed a new roof—you've probably been lucky if there's no damage underneath!

I'm not a professional, but I work with sheet metal.
