Soon going crazy from the creaking and banging stairs at home. If I have to get up and let the cat out at night, I've soon woken up the wife and kids, and that's the end of that night's sleep.
The stairs were installed almost exactly three years ago and are an open U-staircase, which means that most of the steps are held with only one screw in the inner posts, and it's primarily these steps that creak. Unfortunately, these steps also constitute 80% of the staircase.
After lubricating with silicone spray today and securing the steps with all sorts of fitting pieces between the stringer and steps with varying success, it now seems to be where the tread nose wraps around the stringer (see image) that the creak originates. My theory is that the single screw in the inner corner allows the entire step to wobble, because when you stand on a step and alternately put weight on the heel and toes, the step bangs and creaks phenomenally.
I've read all the articles I can find regarding creaky stairs, but it almost always involves other models of stairs. Therefore, I'm grateful for any suggestions that might minimize the noise.
It should be added that I've already tightened all the screws I could reach, loosened the child locks, and as mentioned, stabilized and lubricated the steps where I could reach.
Our staircase is exactly the same and it creaks as well. It's said that fine powder, like baby powder or potato flour, should work. Personally, I'm a bit hesitant to apply organic powder, like potato flour.
Thank you for the answers. Yes, I've also heard about that with potato starch, but I'm hesitant for the same reason. Baby powder, on the other hand, is something new, so it might be worth a try, as it likely won't make things worse
I'm doubtful about retrofitting risers, though. Partly, it would be difficult to make it look nice when they're not routed into the stringers, plus they seem to be what cause creaking in most cases, even though they can have a stabilizing effect.
