Windowsill in marble or asbestos cement?
now no one should do that anymore. cutting into stone material or concrete is also not directly healthypelpet said:Asbestos is actually more dangerous than that. There is a thread about how dangerous asbestos really is. An example I remember from that thread is that if you cut the worst form of asbestos (crocidolite) with an angle grinder for 8 hours without protection, it equates to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 60 years in terms of danger. The least dangerous type of asbestos (chrysotile) equates to only 6 years of smoking.
The deep breath described should therefore equal somewhere between 2 and 250 packs of cigarettes, depending on the type of asbestos.
I have cut such discs with an angle grinder and diamond blade. There will be some chips on the edges (1-2 mm in size) and it is not possible to get it completely straight and 90 degrees by hand, so if you're going to mount them against each other with a minimal seam, it's not optimal. Better to have them done professionally in that case.
Then you can look for that single dangerous fiber while the rest of us avoid excessively risky behavior, such as tearing down asbestos indoors without protection or cutting eternity, without worrying otherwise.Jehu said:
In this context, it is worth pointing out that the situation with asbestos and lung cancer is the same as with sun and skin cancer. One beam of UV light is enough. In both contexts, it's about managing the risk sensibly (i.e. not sunbathing naked at the equator, but also not wearing a burka).
so you mean I'm going to get lung cancer since I once tore asbestos without a maskterm said:
Given that a cut in the windowsill is probably on the lower scale, my comparison wasn't so bad! However, I was being sarcastic, which probably was clear. To make the equation more interesting, how does it all change if you consider the risks of the car trip to and from the stone dealer (whether asking for help with cutting asbestos or buying a new marble slab)?pelpet said:
Jokes aside, I just wanted to point out that it's important to think about how big the risks really are; radon and asbestos are portrayed as deadly weapons even though that's quite far from the truth.
No, I hope not! But there's always a risk, just like that single sun ray you got in Ibiza 2005 risks giving you skin cancer.SBH said:
If it comforts you, I've cut an eternit windowsill with an unclassified mask that leaked a little. We'll find out in 40 years if that was smart or not.
Ibiza? Surely no one wants to go there?term said:
I'm not particularly afraid of asbestos. So many other things have been used that were much more dangerous.
Off topic: No matter how right one is about asbestos or how right one should be, it is very foolish to recommend that people disregard the recommended safety measures as term did in post #3. To me, it's a bit like recommending that people drive without a seatbelt or not turn off the electricity when working with it.
On topic: If you're not getting nice straight cuts, can you then place them with the other side against each other?

but asbestos is not as dangerous as you think.harry73 said:Off topic: Regardless of how dangerous you think asbestos is or how cautious one should be, it is very foolish to recommend people to ignore the recommended safety measures that term suggested in post #3. The reason it would be good to have the joint surfaces in the middle/as a joint part is that you get the nice rounded sides on the edges.
I'm wondering if there could be a joint bracket... Or you simply have it as two boards and then make sure to sand and polish properly.
