Currently renovating the hallway and planning to replace all doors and frames. Discovered that above all the doors there's a "hole" that has just been covered with thin masonite from each side. Does anyone know - or have a qualified guess - why? Does it serve any function that I can't understand?

  • Wooden doorframe with a hole covered by masonite above the door, cardboard boxes and furniture visible in the adjacent room.
Pure laziness and stinginess for not throwing in some (sound) insulation, I would think.
