Hello! I've been to Byggmax and XLBygg and talked to 7 different people and got about as many different answers. It's exhausting:D. So I was wondering if there is any mason or similar here who can help us. The house is from 1939.

Entrance steps: They seem to consist of some kind of lime mortar on the inside and then there are two more layers on the outside. We were considering Finja’s Hydraulic Lime Mortar. The same we used for our old chimney. In that case, does it work as a foundation to walk on? Then Finja also has KC Bruk-B and KC Bruk-C in their range, which I assume have lime and cement in them? Otherwise, there are the regular A, B, and C as well:thinking:. Building a completely new staircase is probably not an option since a balcony stands on top of it via two asbestos pillars:rofl:.

Foundation of the old conservatory: The foundation has settled and cracked in the middle as there was no drainage or water diversion. There was also a cast flower bed edge that led water under the foundation. I'm considering if it's possible to cast those big cracks again with Finbetong and then finish it superficially with a render? Alternatively, casting a completely new layer over the entire foundation to make it even.

Stairs to the utility entrance: Also seems to consist of some lime mortar/stone on the inside and some smoother harder mortar on the outside. The corners broke due to a rusted iron railing. We want to repair and cast 4 new post shoes.

Thankful for all the help we can get. Regards

  • Concrete entrance stairs with metal railing, showing wear and moss growth, adjacent to a house. Drainage pipe covered with green plastic extends from wall.
  • Close-up of damaged exterior wall showing layered plaster and masonry, with visible cracks and peeling, illustrating renovation challenges on old structures.
  • Cracked concrete foundation with visible large fractures and uneven surface.
  • A damaged concrete corner showing exposed inner layers and crumbling surface of a stair structure.
Hi! How did it go? How did you do it? I have the exact same stairs and problem ☺

Best regards, Viktor

Hey! Haven't fixed the stairs yet, but I plan to do it like this, after advice from a carpenter and the paint shop.

1. Wash the whole thing with hydrochloric acid. Rinse off.

2. Knock off all loose mortar. (all hollow pockets). Use a wire brush to remove loose paint. Rinse off.

3. Prime and repair with Finja A-mortar. Brush a bit in the mortar so the next layer adheres better. When it has dried, apply another layer of A-mortar and smooth it with a straightedge or plank. Before it dries completely, scrub it with a scrubbing board so it matches the rest of the stairs.

4. Paint with Dry Tech in the desired color.

Here is a link to an awesome mason who repairs stairs, etc.

Feel free to get back to me with how you did it and the result. Regards
