Hi

I'm going to fill the holes after handles and locks on a couple of doors.
Thus, I need 8 pcs of 40 mm wooden dowels (side grain, not end grain).
Preferably in pine.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of dowels?
If not, where to buy a plug drill at a reasonable price?
Toolbox charges around 500:- for one and I think that's a bit too much....

Would it be possible to turn them or would it just splinter turning side grain (I suspect that with my simple lathe)?

Best regards

Peter

Doesn't a regular hole saw work? Or am I thinking completely wrong?

Yes, if you can get exactly a 40 mm inner diameter on the hole saw and it should be very round (about 0.5 mm)

Hello Peter!

Unfortunately, dowel and cylinder bits are quite expensive in the sizes you need. If you only need 8, perhaps you can ask a smaller carpentry shop if they can do it, they'll probably want a little money for it and you won't own a dowel bit afterwards... I hope you have a good pillar drill for the job as well, it's not something you do with the screwdriver ;)

Why not saw out a bit more and insert a square piece of wood?

Hello,

Thanks for the tip. I've been considering it.

I plan to glue two doors together to make a wide sliding door.
I thought about gluing the lock case to lock case with a square piece in both lock cases and using a through 40mm dowel to lock the construction.
Unnecessary, yes, but a bit of fun.
With the price of plug drills, it's not happening.
It'll be a square hole, or I'll cut off a piece of the door and replace it with solid wood.

To keep it straight, I'll reinforce it with flat iron on the top and bottom edges.

Kind regards,

Peter
