I don't know how many hours I've now spent searching for information on the subject and traveling back and forth to different building stores with the goal of developing a decent understanding of what it actually takes to fix the house's base...
Unfortunately, I feel that it seems difficult to find someone who provides a comprehensive answer to the question, and I therefore hope that some of you can help us out!
We have a house from the 30s and have just taken down the metal facade, put up new battens and painted, which makes us now want the base to get a little lift. However, it doesn't need to last more than a year since we plan to drain the house next year (we know it's unnecessary to do anything now but we/I am still willing to put in the extra time to have something nicer to look at..)
Current situation:
- Black base with loose plaster that I've chipped away, and some parts where the plaster is now gone have splashes of what I believe to be asphalt. The base has been repaired before and that plaster is very light and porous (perhaps lime plaster?), previous paint used might be plastic paint but I don't know..
My two questions/concerns are:
- Which steps MUST we take immediately even if we're just doing it temporarily? (For example, must all the paint or asphalt be removed for new plaster to adhere?)
- Which steps MUST be taken once we've drained and they need to last as long as possible?
Attaching some pictures that might be helpful, and I'm of course also interested in what tools I should buy to make it as easy as possible along with any other useful information!
