Hi

I am going to hang things on the walls in my new rental apartment, but I don't understand what kind of material this is and what kind of plug/screw I should use. The building was constructed in the 1930s. I think maybe it's some kind of concrete and "slag"? There are cavities after about 1 cm of concrete and inside it's like "gravel."

This was when I was going to hang up a mirror that has two mounts on the back, so I was thinking of using two screws with plastic plugs.

  • A drilled hole in a wall, revealing rough concrete and gravel-like interior, with colorful papers below for collecting debris.
  • Hole in a wall with a pile of crumbled material on a colorful paper, possibly indicating wall composition; context for hanging items in a 1930s apartment.
One can assume that the wall is composed of several different materials in layers. Likely, the outer part consists of plaster. The core could be wood (i.e., planks), brick, aerated concrete, or concrete. Other types of masonry are also possible. Plaster (cement/lime + sand) is soft, concrete is rock-hard. Homogeneous concrete walls found in more modern houses are uncommon in houses from the 1930s. The choice of the mounting method depends on what the wall is made of. Consult someone with more experience.
