Hi, I need some tips on approach and material selection.

I have a concrete balcony above the entrance. The issue is that the owner has painted both the top and underside of the balcony with a dense paint, causing the paint to peel off in large chunks, which looked terrible. I have now used a diamond grinder on both the top and underside of the balcony to remove the paint.

My idea is to paint the underside of the balcony with a mineral paint (silicate paint), but I want to lay tiles on top of the balcony. A thought then occurred to me, why not put a waterproofing layer (membrane) on the top and then tiles in the same way as when we did the bathroom. That way, we would prevent moisture from penetrating the concrete slab from above but allow the slab to breathe by having silicate paint on the underside.

Does this work well? If yes - which sealing compounds and membrane are recommended (should be suitable for outdoor use)?

Regards,
Fred

Interesting! I will definitely read through the PDF. I currently have an edge plate around the balcony that is bent around the outer sides of the balcony, and I have a good slope on the top, so this looks like it could work well.

Thank you for the tip about Ardex 8+9. I read from Ardex's product sheet: "ARDEX 8+9 can also be used outdoors as protection against moisture penetration on, for example, terraces, patios, and balconies." I have read about other similar products, and they say their products cannot handle outdoor environments, and Ardex does not specify a temperature range. Is there anyone more knowledgeable, between which temperatures can Ardex be used outdoors?

How did your balcony turn out like this a couple of years later?

I did according to what I wrote above and it turned out very well! I haven't had any problems since I did it.

Thank you so much for the feedback! Your result will definitely be taken into account when it comes to our balcony.

Did it also become Ardex 8+9?

If you're asking me, the answer is yes. It was very easy to apply and resulted in a proper rubber-like layer.

I'm about to do the same work and have a question: what type of sheet metal did you choose for the front edge of the balcony?

I did it in a similar way:
- Sanded down the entire top and underside with a diamond grinder to remove old paint and even out
- Self-leveled the balcony with slope outward
- Edge flashing around the entire balcony (existing edge flashing embedded in the slab)
- Waterproofing with Ardex 8+9 in two opposite directions
- Tiles (Marrakesh) on the top side
- Painted the underside (which is above the entrance) with white silicate paint

Now, almost 6 years later, this is still in like-new condition. The silicate paint has come off in one spot on the underside towards the outer edge equivalent to the area of half a credit card; I suspect the slab has gotten damp and there has been breakthrough with salts, etc. The slab stands outside round the clock, year-round, in all weather conditions, snow, and frost, so I think it's quite a good result so far.
