Quick question: When you wash black mold with a chlorine water mixture, does all the mold die even if the wood remains stained afterwards?
A little longer explanation...
We recently replaced and raised a leaking roof. It has probably leaked for many years as it discolored the ceiling through 30cm of insulation, plastic, ceiling board and Treetex panels. When we tore down the ceiling, there was still water present. Everything has been removed except the rafters. The rafters were patchily black where the water had run along the plastic.
One question is, the black stuff, is it mold or just discoloration?
Now I have washed the rafters with a scrubbing brush and chlorine mixture. It gets significantly better but quite a bit of black remains. Is it mold or just discoloration? Does the chlorine kill all the mold? Do I need to scrub the rafters until they look factory-fresh? I find it hard to believe... they've been there since the 70s.
When everything is finished, the old rafters will have plenty of air around them, insulation will go to the top edge, and then there will be half a meter of ventilation.
So can I rebuild the roof or should I scrub several more times until no black remains?
