Earlier this autumn, I installed a new front door and sidelight on the house and am strongly considering building a small roof over the stairs to protect them from the weather.

The roof should cover the platform outside the door, which is about 150-160 cm wide.

The idea is to replace the existing stair railing and build new ones with long posts and a handrail.

The problem is that the door is on the long side of the house, so the eave ends about 15 cm above the door's top edge - otherwise, I could have mounted a regular awning with brackets, which are so popular nowadays...

The stairs go to the right and cannot be changed to straight, as the driveway goes right outside the door and the space to the property line is not enough.

One alternative is to extend the existing roof, with tiles, over the stairs, but then I'm afraid of losing a lot of the light that comes into the hallway.
I have also checked with plexiglass at the glazier, but I'm a bit doubtful if it will stay nice for any length of time.
Roofing sheet or corrugated plastic is not an option for me to say.

Does anyone have other suggestions and/or ideas, or maybe even pictures of what you have done?

Half-decent picture of the stairs and door:
