I'm planning to mount a TV on the wall using a wall bracket with an arm that can extend 90 cm from the wall. The wall bracket + TV weighs 17.3 kg, and the bracket is attached with four screws vertically about 10 cm apart (except for the two at the top), see attached image.
Now the question is whether it would hold with four M6 molly bolts in the wall bracket. After all, there's a 90 cm lever arm that increases the torque quite a bit.

I would try to put up a wooden board on the wall that is attached to at least one stud. You can always paint it the color of the wall or something to make it blend in.
Sidetopic; just when my partner had moved into her then-apartment, before we met, the landlord's property manager came one day and said "I'm going to put up a board on the wall so you have something to attach the TV to, it's just single drywall here." My partner didn't have a TV and had no interest in getting one, but since she's a bit conflict-averse, she didn't say anything. When she came home later that day, the property manager had screwed up a 60x120 (brown) formplyfa on the wall
You could say it clashed a bit with the newly renovated kitchen...

I was trying to attach a towel rack to drywall, but regular Molly bolts started giving way as soon as I tested the load.
I watched a YouTube video, and the above ones were better but required larger holes if I recall correctly. So in that test, they weren't incredibly much better than a Molly. I've been thinking about what to do, and I will probably use a couple of Molly bolts and then screw and glue a piece of wood that will distribute the load over a larger area. The downside is that it's non-reversible, you'd have to redo the entire wall if you want to remove the piece of wood. But in my case, you'd probably have to do that if you want to redo the bathroom anyway as it's not okay with just drywall (today it's not tiled). Or just not do it at all.
I would never want to attach something heavy with "just" Molly bolts or even the above, as the drywall itself is quite weak for spot loads. If you spread the load over a large area, I think it's very strong.

I'm pretty sure that only molly bolts or other drywall anchors in the TV mount will tear the drywall when the TV is pulled out from the wall. I would think it might work with a plywood board attached with 6-8 molly bolts and then the equivalent for double board thickness in the TV stand. If any part of the board can hit a stud, it's a bonus. The board can then be painted the same color as the wall.

you can't have 2 molly bolts at the top so close together, find the studs in the wall if it's an older wall they usually sit at c/c 600mm, a more modern wall it might be c/c 450mm check with a magnet if you can find the drywall screw or loosen the baseboard and you should see the seam of the boardsM MattZak said:I am going to mount a TV on the wall using a wall bracket with an arm that can extend 90 cm from the wall. Okay, feeling a bit silly now that I discovered there's actually a stud right where I'm supposed to mount the TV
(used the magnet trick mentioned above as it was very hard to hear when tapping).
So the problem solved itself!
