Built a carport/garage using Dorocell modules. That is, Styrofoam blocks with concrete filling. Very convenient and excellent insulation!
My questions are:
- I will install horizontal cladding (this is done directly on the wall as there are plastic ties embedded in the modules). Since I will install the roof next year or later in the fall, I wonder if I need to use pressure-treated studs?
- Do 45x45 studs work?
- There will be an air gap between the wall and cladding, are there any disadvantages?
- Has anyone used these materials and have other tips?
- The cladding ends about 30cm from the asphalt. Should I plaster or use metal for the last bit?
The manufacturer of the modules should have technical descriptions on how the wall should be constructed. It's better to look there than for us, who have never used the material, to guess.
But a question:
You write that you plan to put up wood paneling on the walls, it's not clear whether externally or internally, before you cover the whole thing with a roof. Isn't this a very unsuitable procedure? It ensures that the timber could get damaged.
Which you realize when you write about pressure-treated wood.
Place masonite, plywood, sheet metal, or similar on top of the wall so that no significant rain or snow comes in. Anchor with, for example, paving stones/slabs so it doesn't blow away. Even better if it's possible to nail or screw, of course. Do not let the edges stick out more than 1-2cm, otherwise it may catch too much wind. Since there is an air gap between the wall and the panel, moisture is ventilated/dried out over time, meaning it's not super critical to prevent every single drop of rain from getting in. It's just over the winter.
45x45 mm should work.
Due to the air gap, you should definitely mouse-proof it. (Mice like insulation.)
Personally, I would prefer plaster. (I like solid, sturdy, durable, quiet, simple, robust, easy-to-maintain materials with well-known properties.)
The reason we are building the panel before the roof is the cost. We have quite a bit to build this year but want to get the panel on the wall for appearance. Styrofoam wall is not that nice
The reason we chose this construction is because it also acts as a wall since we have a sloping site.
