I'm going to build a cheap cold storage.

I want vertical paneling.

1) Can you attach the paneling directly to the wall studs, meaning I have to use strapping (since I want vertical paneling)?

2) Which vertical panel board should I use, a cheap one without trim. Is it a z-panel then?

3) Do I use building paper between the studs and paneling, or is that overkill?

One usually always regrets certain constructions. Especially when trying to simplify or cut corners.

I would go for a vapor barrier and battens so you get an air gap between the wall and panel.

Regardless of whether you insulate in the future, the vapor barrier catches some of the dirt that blows around, so you get it a little cleaner in the cold storage, and you can always insulate in the future.

No, I will never insulate. I have built with pressure-treated wood.

Timber costs roughly per volume. It might be that you save on the cost of the nail battens by going down a dimension on the studs and skipping noggings. Going down to 95 standing should be more than sufficient.

So my tip is standing studs, membrane, nail battens, and the panel with the best square meter price in your store; also consider lengths and waste, a more expensive board in optimal length can be cheaper overall.

But….

I'm thinking like z-panel or something similar.

Such a panel overlaps each other and then I think it doesn't let in so much debris.

Then I should be able to skip the wind barrier

And then I can skip the battens.
