Hello,

As the title suggests, I'm looking for beams for floor joists, 45x220 in lengths of at least 5 meters. (Actually 4.97 but who measures...? :D) Byggmax and similar seem to have only up to 4.80, and apart from Beijer, at least the larger firms don’t seem to have the range online. Beijer has C14 in 5.4m and 5.7m for 240/270 SEK each. Does anyone have any tips on any other hardware store/lumber yard in or around Gothenburg that might have a lower price? Then I also need shorter lengths but then I guess Byggmax with 39.95 per meter for C24 is hard to beat...?

Many thanks for all the tips!
ToRy

Some department stores have a restriction on the lengths they accept because they can't handle the longest ones, but among the department stores that don't have a restriction, which in my area are most, it's chance that determines which lengths they happen to have in stock at the moment.

I bought through Beijer who had it custom made with finger jointing and it is not expensive at all. These were 6.5 meters.

I should add that the longest length of normal timber at the lumber yards is 5.40m, and as mentioned, it is random what is available. As for 220x45, I think it's somewhat rarer to find the very longest lengths compared to thinner dimensions. But it does occur!

According to the dimensioning tables, you cannot normally have more than just over a 4m span for that dimension, for most normal applications. So it seems unnecessary to keep longer in stock.

Used for much more than flooring.

then it's only a 4.50 SEK/m difference. and you get the right length. Call and negotiate, it will probably be cheaper than at Byggmax if you need several.

I bought my 45x220 C24 from Mölnlycke trä. Significantly better quality than Byggmax equivalent. Cheaper too, I paid around 33kr per meter. However, these are "bargained" prices! I don't know what lengths they have in stock, but I think 4.80 is the longest they have in stock, not sure though.

One can stiffen up considerably by cross-bracing. Preferably screw-glue to avoid the popping of nails that cannot hold properly.

Yes, or make it a bit easier and install kortlingar instead. But it probably won't help to avoid deflection if you have up to 5m span.

But that probably won't help to avoid deflection if you have spans up to 5m.
Not completely avoid it, but the load is distributed over a larger area thanks to the bridging, and then the deflection is less and the bounce is reduced. The floor structure becomes less sensitive to point loads.

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely check out Mölnlycke trä!
The construction will be a frame around 45x220, and the longest lengths I need for the joists, which will then lie cc60 (it's probably called something, but I have no idea;)) are about 5 meters. These will, in addition to being attached with joist hangers at the ends of the frame, also rest on a 45x220 beam in the middle of the house (I actually know what it's called but can't think of it now...(I got it - bärlina! :))) I've also thought of placing noggings, at least two per section. It's probably over-dimensioned with 45x220 when the free span is only 2.5 meters and maybe it would have worked fine to splice over the bärlina, but I'm the type who prefers to overdo and avoid splices unless absolutely necessary. I only plan 140 insulation in the floor, so perhaps 45x195 or even 45x170 would suffice...? Oh well, if no one screams loudly, I'll go with 45x220. The frame and bärlina will be resting on concreted u-post shoes.
Anyway, I don't need that many 5-meter lengths, just 8 or 9, the rest will be shorter lengths. The cabin in question is only about 40 sqm, so any bulk discount is unlikely to be relevant.

By the way, great tip on screwing and gluing the noggings! What glue should be used for this? How many screws should be used for each end of the nogging?

Now I just need to get winter tires for the boat trailer as well, so I can transport the five-meter pieces in a sensible way. :D

Is the beam sized correctly?

I have a mezzanine floor of 5x5 meters that I'll use as storage (unknown load, therefore), I specially ordered 4"8" at 5.20 length (now I received them at about 6 meters). So that's 100x200 mm in dense-grown pine, costing 60 SEK per meter plus VAT and freight. Indian Wood in Exhärad was the supplier. I am placing them at c-c 600 mm, including steel blocking (easier to manage with welding).

Is the beam properly dimensioned?
Good question. I have planned for and prepared for 45x220 there as well, but is it enough? I chose dimensions using a construction guide downloaded from... well, some website... so I believe it is enough. I can't remember what the website is called now, but I have the brochure lying around somewhere... I've started to consider using double 45x220 as the beam. Overkill x2...?
