Vapor barrier around chimney? How to do it right.
How do you solve this with a vapor barrier around the chimney? I am going to staple the plastic in the ceiling before insulating the attic, but how do you meet the requirements of not having combustible material near the chimney while also being diffusion-tight? Are there any specialized items intended for this purpose? Thanks in advance for the reply/Ola
I had actually forgotten that I started this thread. But, I visited the chimney sweep today and asked what the rules were... he said that I could extend the plastic all the way up to the chimney stack, because it needs to be sealed. But the sparse paneling should stop 10 cm away from the chimney stack. Now, this applies in the municipality where I live, I don't know if it's the same throughout the country, so it's probably best for you to speak with the chimney sweep where you live.
ok thanks for the quick response.
but isn't it a bit funny that the rules regarding what can and cannot be against the chimney can differ between municipalities? is the risk of fire greater in Västerås municipality compared to Uppsala?
I can't quite make sense of it...
I'll give the chimney sweep a call this week.

The rules are the same throughout the country. The reason you might get different answers is partly because the chimney sweeps are ignorant and partly because certain questions are not clearly regulated but involve interpretations that obviously vary.
Lifting my thread again, how have you others here on the forum attached the plastic to the chimney stack to make it tight? I've considered different solutions, such as carefully taping with T-flex, smearing asphalt glue on the chimney stack and then "pressing" the plastic onto it, but maybe the plastic can't handle that?
