If one were to decide to build a sort of wooden bench for a shower area, cheaply and quickly, which type of wood is recommended? Or regular wood that is properly lacquered? It will not stand in water constantly, but will be splashed and showered.

It might sound a bit odd, but regular sparse paneling 28x70 is cheap and excellent for building all sorts of things.

A bit of clear lacquer on if it’s going to be in the shower/bathroom might not hurt

In principle, you can use any type of wood as long as the construction does not stand in water. It is nicest to use planed wood which is lightly smoothed with regular 100 sandpaper. Unfortunately, the availability of planed wood at regular building supply stores is very limited. Often only pine is available. Sometimes you can find oak and aspen (for sauna benches). I don't think such constructions should be varnished, as it only creates a maintenance issue. Sauna furniture, for example, is rarely surface-treated.
