Hello
I have now had enough of never having the right kind of screw at home when something needs to be done. I want to buy a basic assortment that will suffice for most things you need to do at home. Both indoors and outdoors.

What is the best way to build a base? Should I buy a big box with mixed screws or buy many individual boxes of screws? With the second option, you'll probably need some sort of storage to keep things from getting lost.

How much difference is there between the different brands? There is quite a price difference when you look around. I am happy to pay a little extra for quality.

Any tips/suggestions on the best way to solve this?

Best regards/Peter

I would go for an EssBox from Essve and buy boxes with the screws you might need. Definitely the right way to go. Easy to refill. Replace and then it always ends up with needing another box with a bunch of extras! :D

That looks pretty convenient. Do you know if they are sold at the regular hardware stores or is it more "professional stores" that have them?

You can find them at most major building supply stores, such as XL Bygg.

Bauhaus, et al have them too. :)

Do you know if any online store sells Essboxen at a good price? I don't have either Bauhaus or XL Bygg near me. It's usually cheaper online unless the building supply stores are running a promotion.

Biltema also has affordable screw kits. Available for both outdoor and indoor use. [link] I haven't found any faults with Biltema's screws otherwise.
I usually avoid Biltema because I've had some bad experiences with items I've bought there. But maybe their screws work.....

Yes, it varies. And unfortunately, their supply channels probably vary over the years too. So a screw that was great and a real bargain a few years ago might be bad today.

That's (one of) the problems when things are rebranded, in this case, Biltema. It only says Biltema on the box, and you have no idea if the contents this time come from the factory in Hungary, China, or Bangladesh...

I have a bad experience with Biltema's anchor screws, which could be unscrewed with a screwdriver very easily.

I skipped the screws in favor of Gunnebo's anchor nails since, after all, they were for use in roof trusses. ;)

Biltema's regular galvanized wire nails in 60mm were also a disappointment. They were too soft, and it was barely possible to hammer them in without them bending. Pinto's low-cost nails, of which I had hammered in thousands before, were much better.

Then there are several things from BT that work well for me.

Their set with assembly screws in many different sizes has worked just fine, and I'm so glad I bought one that rarely leaves me with a shortage of screws when those screws suffice.

I have also used their window flashing screws without any complaints, except that they were ridiculously cheap compared to the competitors. :)

I've probably used more screws from BT, like chipboard screws, on which I haven't discovered any problems.

In summary, I'm a bit torn and quite hesitant about BT screws and nails when it comes to crucial load-bearing structures. Otherwise, I'm quite open to at least trying.

Decent price, there were a few in Västerås this weekend.
Now it was screws he wanted and not an empty box.

Hehe yeah a bunch of different screws is what I needed. Though the case will probably be practical once I've bought it.

Bauhaus seems to only sell the boxes online. No screws? Does anyone know of any online store that sells essve screws?

I think it sounds like the old essve box is what OP needs. The metal one filled with screws. I bought one when I was in the same situation and am very satisfied. But the question is if they can still be found somewhere. Bauhaus had a bunch of them a while ago, but it seems they've been replaced by the new ess-box. But then you don't get the screw assortment. Before I bought the essve metal box, I had an assortment case from Jula. But it was discarded after I stripped several screws during the same project (the first one I used it for). Even if you buy good screws, I think they cost so little in a project that it's not worth being stuck with a stripped screw in the wrong place. It can ruin the entire project. I am very satisfied with essve screws. I've mostly heard good things about them from others as well. However, I've heard criticism about them being used in plugs. The threads that are supposed to form the screw hole can apparently tear the plug apart. I haven't used plugs that much myself, but the times I have, that hasn't been a problem for me.

Yes, for plugs you probably shouldn't actually use screws with cuts. I suppose.

But it's not something I think about either, in the heat of battle ...

Pretty sure the old metal boxes are no longer sold by Essve.
