Learned a trick a long time ago, and it has come in handy a couple of times. So I'll share my latest project.

To get the doors aligned with evenly thick gaps, do the following:
Build the doors as a unit
Mount the door's part of the hinges
Place the entire unit in the door opening and wedge for even gaps.
Mark where the other part of the hinges should go by holding them in place and marking for the screw.
Remove the door, saw in half in the middle. Screw on the hinges. Put in place.

My doors lack door stops and a drop bolt in the picture, that'll be tomorrow….

  • Wooden door panels being constructed outdoors on sawhorses, with clamps and tools visible, surrounded by trees and outdoor items.
  • Wooden shed with newly installed double doors, missing door stops and locks. A metal bar leans against the dark brown siding.

Off topic is that the workbench in the background in image 1 I won on Byggahus a couple of years ago… it's great!

An even more secure option is to build the door in the doorway, attach the hinges, and then cut it in half. That way, you don't have to struggle with moving almost finished and heavy doors into the doorway; they hang in place on their own when they are ready.
