Tiles in the basement

I am renovating the basement in our house from -56. How do you handle tiles near the stairs? Do you use grout or is it smarter with silicone? I'm also considering sprucing up the stairs at the same time. I think they have been varnished, but it's hard to tell because they're so worn.

Ehhh.... The staircase, does it refer to an outdoor basement staircase, an indoor wooden staircase, an indoor stone staircase, or what?

Where tiles meet wood material, I always use soft sealant.

Sorry, I forgot to write that. It is the indoor staircase that is made of wood and stands directly on the concrete floor.
I became a bit puzzled when I heard that it doesn't matter if it is grout or silicone. Thanks for the answer MaxPax
