Hello,

I live in a newly built villa in the Stockholm area. Now that it has snowed, I've noticed that there are two places where the snow melts at the base of the house, even though it is several degrees below zero outside.

The foundation is a slab on grade.

Is this normal?

I think a lot of heat is likely leaking from the house then.

Yes, heat is leaking there for some reason. (Or someone has salted there...)

One location is at the same place as the electrical cabinet and the other is on the patio by the patio door. But I have two identical patio doors and the snow melts only in front of one.

I assume you have L-elements on your house, which means the element has only 100mm of foam insulation outward, so it is. This is because the downward load of the wall requires concrete underneath in the edge beam. At the electrical cabinet, I assume you mean the facade meter cabinet where you have your electricity meter, where sometimes it's necessary to remove a bit of foam insulation from the L-element to fit all the electrical conduits, fiber optic pipes, etc. What's happening at your patio doors is more difficult to determine...

  • Cross-section diagram of house foundation with L-shaped elements; includes insulation layers, a concrete base, and wooden flooring above.

What happens at your patio doors is harder to discern...
Exactly, the snow melts at the facade meter cabinet. There are three 50mm yellow conduits for electricity and fiber.

From what I can see from the pictures, the conduits run inside the insulation.

  • Yellow pipes near construction site, positioned inside insulation; nearby blue cables visible. Background shows a 'no parking' sign and concrete structure.

But they might have made a larger hole at the bottom perhaps? This is nothing to worry about...
When there is snow against the foundation, the snow clearly melts away around the house, at least on my house...
