The exterior walls in an apartment building built in '49 sound hollow when I knock. How are they constructed?
I was planning to hang up two on the outer wall but discovered when I knocked that it seems empty. How are the walls constructed, it sounds like there are studs behind but what is attached to the studs and what should I use for fastenings? Molly?

Perhaps it is polished brick or hollow brick, which are troublesome to hang something heavy on. It was probably not common with any stud constructions during that time in rental buildings, but they may have been added later. Neighbors or the landlord should know.
