What is the difference between silicone and latex?

When I went to buy wood filler, I saw that they had an identical tube with latex filler.

Is latex filler the same thing as the latex you can buy in cartridges?

One difference between latex and silicon is that you cannot paint over silicon, which you can do with latex.

Latex should also not be used in wet areas as far as I know :)

As you write it - "LaTeX" - it has nothing to do with putty. Then it is a typesetting system.

Well, it was Firefox that thought it should be spelled like that...

But silicone - most of them usually say they are paintable.

I'm working on my walls right now, and everyone is pointing out latex, so I got curious why latex and not a silicone one...

It usually says that the silicone goo is not paintable?! I try to keep my distance from these tubes, as it's a real sticky mess... I have very rarely felt the need to use it in the house. A single bead by the kitchen counters, and that's enough... Akrylat(ex)-sealant is easier to work with.

The painter thought I should use silicone when sealing inside the walls, he had heard that mice liked latex?
