You get what you pay for.
Cheap tarpaulins can be found everywhere (rusta, bauhaus, etc.) and they work well if you can be very careful with them - it's like handling tissue paper..... Sometimes they suffice, sometimes you need something a bit more durable.

We bought white tarpaulins at Ö&B that hold up really well, they are a bit sturdier than the usual cheap green or gray tarps that aren't good for anything. The white ones, I think they were 180 grams, we've used for covering timber and roofing during our extension this spring, and they have remained intact and waterproof despite wear and tear, rain, and wind. Real tarpaulins are so outrageously expensive...
