Hello! We have taken down a wall between the kitchen and the living room and now I'm considering how to best finish the opening (please see the pictures).

The floor between the kitchen and living room is at different heights. I'm thinking about buying more of the old floor and adding another row so the "gap" isn't as large.

The walls have drywall. Should we sand and spackle and then paint them to get the nicest corners? Or should we install trim and MDF panels instead?

The ceiling is at different heights. There are old moldings in the living room that go under the new ceiling in the kitchen. The house was built in the 60s and it used to be open between the living room and what was then a dining room.

Considering building a box that comes down a bit from the ceiling. But as I said, I'm not sure how to make it look nice.

If you have any tips and advice, we'd gladly welcome them.

  • Opening between kitchen and living room showing different floor heights, an exposed beam overhead, and a dining table with chairs in a well-lit space.
  • Different height floors between kitchen and living room with visible gap and unfinished wall edges.
  • Damaged wall between two rooms showing different floor levels; children's play kitchen on right; clothing rack on left.
  • Opening between kitchen and living room with exposed plasterboard and wood, showing uneven ceiling and wall edges during renovation.
  • Opening between kitchen and living room with exposed wall between different ceiling heights, showing a modern kitchen with black pendant lights.
Definitely plaster if possible. That will make it look as if the house was like that from the beginning. You just attach reinforcement strips to the outer corners. To cover the part coming down from the ceiling, you need a strip of plaster and then a corner strip from wall to wall.
